about

We Were There waxes nostalgic, both in the lyrics about an exceptional night and the 90s-riffic Matchbox20-style music. It harkens back to one of those summer evenings when everything is going right, even if it’s wrong, and you have to pinch yourself, literally, to remind yourself it wasn’t just a dream.

lyrics

LYRICS:

I opened up my eyes and the pillow said you'd gone
The alarm clock to my right played your favorite song
As if it's trying to torture me for everything that I'd done wrong

I said please forgive me father, cause I'm pretty sure I sinned
My friends and my relations are the ones who dragged me in
And carried me out on their shoulders back to where I begin

And I wonder...

Pretty sure you left me on the street corner that night
Avoiding all the raindrops still heated from our fight
Looked over my shoulder realized this was not right

Then I told you something what it was I do not know
Because my prime objective was so that you wouldn't go
Looking back upon it I think I told you so

And I wonder
And I wonder
How you're sleeping tonight
And if you are alright
If you ever told anyone you know about that night
When we were walking on air
And like
Nobody cared
And later on you're gonna have to pinch yourself
To convince yourself we were there

So we sat at high table and barely said a word
Just sat there and listened to everything we heard
Like a kid trying to make out everything he's learned

And then I told you something in a language you don't know
I thought it might be easier - I think I told you so
You told me that you loved me and I said
I know.

And I wonder
And I wonder
How you're sleeping tonight
And if you are alright
If you ever told anyone you know about that night
When we were walking on air
And like
Nobody cared
And later on you're gonna have to pinch yourself
To convince yourself we were there
